We've put together this simple step by step tutorial (with photos) which will help you to make a great job of Dolly's hair.
We suggest pre-cutting your lengths of wool/yarn in advance. It is well worth persevering with and not skimping as our costume patterns with hoods have taken the amount and bulk of Dolly's hair into consideration when designing the outfits.
STEP 1
Transfer the lines on the hair diagram/pattern to the rear of the doll’s head. Use vanishing pen, a line of long stitches, a row of pins or tailors chalk.
STEP 2
Insert an embroidery needle loaded with a strand of the pre-cut wool on a line and bring up approximately 3-4mm further along the line.
STEP 3
Pull half of the length of wool through.
STEP 4
Remove the needle.
STEP 5
Using the two ends of the wool, tie a double knot at the base.
STEP 6
Take the next strand of wool and insert where the last strand comes out of the fabric.
STEP 7
Repeat steps 2 to 4.
STEP 8
Tie a double knot with the two new pieces, the same as in step 5.
Repeat for each line, for the whole line.
It’s best to turn dolly's head on the side and work along the lines horizontally.
When you turn Dolly up the right way the hair will fall vertical and give a pleasing ‘layered’ look, and, cover most of the knots.
